The Importance of Activity Toys

The importance of games and toys for children cannot be underestimated as play is the language of childhood.   A child needs toys to entertain, to stimulate and to educate him/her.  You, as a parent need toys and games to use as bridge builders to building your relationship with your child.  Play is the best way to connect with your child and to teach almost anything, in the most relaxing way possible.

Children are multisensory beings and they need to discover their world through real objects, toys and games and by being exposed to many different environments. They also need to be socialised by interacting with real people. When we say ‘real’, we mean actual people since we live in a digital age where kids interact with a screen from a young age.

For a child to create understanding and meaning about their world, they need far more interaction with real than they do with a screen in the baby, toddler and foundation phases of life (up until age 9). In fact, children learn best through concrete learning experiences right up until the age of 12.  Play is also fun and everyone needs to have more fun today.

How do you know if you’re choosing the correct activity toy?

By knowing where your child is at developmentally, you can select the toys that will assist you in stimulating the skills they are currently trying to master. For example: rolling at six months, learning about shape at two years, and discovering the social rules of play, such as taking turns, at the age of three.

Children need a variety of toys to play with. From the winking, blinking, noisy variety (that require lots of batteries), to traditional toys such as wooden building blocks, or educational toys that are specifically designed to stimulate their perceptual skills. Some toys are purely entertaining while others are educational. Make sure that you choose toys that stimulate your children’s senses because that is how they learn about their world.

Children will outgrow some toys in just a few months or even weeks! That’s why it is such a good idea to rent short-term with us!

What type of toys children should have:

  • Age appropriate toys are to be provided for the child.
  • Carefully read the instructions before buying the toy and ensure that instructions are clear and must review the warnings.
  • Educational toys help in finding directions, cooperation with each other and rules that are important in learning, sharing and social skills are helpful to children.
  • Keep all toys, especially plush and soft baby toys, away from heat sources like stoves, fireplaces and heaters.
  • Ensure that there are no hazards such as loose parts, broken pieces or sharp edges. Repair or discard any weak or broken toys before the children try to play with that.
  • Ride-on toys should suit your child’s age, size and abilities.
  • Good toys can engage your child’s talent and passion for fun and create interest to develop physical, mental and emotional self.
  • Add some surprises to your child’s toy which can create interest in expanding his world.
